90’s movies!

I am a movie person. I have been saying this for a long time. I eat movies. I breathe movies. I literally live movies. So as a movie buff, I cannot help but think about the wonders of cinema of the 90’s, which according to me is the greatest cinematic decade of all time. Therefore I have been preparing a list of these masterpieces for a while now. I have written about a few films here. and I’ll be adding more as i know for sure that some other films are bound to pop up in my mind. So here it goes.

PS : The numbering means nothing here. It’s just ordered by the release dates. They don’t represent the quality or anything of the film.

  1. The Silence of The Lambs (1991): The Silence of The Lambs was one kind of a horror film at the time of its release. The film received universal critical acclaim upon its release and also became a huge success financially. The film won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. The Silence of The Lambs became the first Horror film to win the Best Film Award at the Oscars. Decades later, the film is still watched and is considered as one of the best films of the 90’s.
  2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): Terminator 2: Judgment Day is considered one of the greatest science fiction films ever. The film was directed by James Cameron and was released in 1991. It was an ambitious project and it cost a lot to make. Eventually Terminator 2: Judgment Dayturned out to be the most expensive film made up to that point with a budget of $102 million. The film was both critically and commercially successful. This film took Computer Generated Imaginary to new levels. Terminator 2: Judgment Day won four Academy Awards and became the highest grossing film of 1991. The film is considered one of the greatest films of the 90’s by many people.
  3. Jurassic Park (1993): Directed by the visionary Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park is a science fiction film released back in 1993. Based on the novel of Michael Crichton, this was Spielberg’s most ambitious project up to that point. The film received universal critical acclaim upon its release and turned out to be the highest grossing film at the time. The film won many accolades including three Academy Awards. The film broke new grounds in the field of CGI and is arguably one of the best films of the 90’s.
  4. The Lion King (1994): The Lion King is an animated musical film directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. It was released in 1994. After its release, it soon became the highest-grossing film of 1994 and second highest-grossing film ever. The film was highly praised for its story, animation and music. It received many accolades including two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes. The Lion King is widely considered as one of the greatest animation films ever made.
  5. Pulp Fiction (1994): Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction is a neo-noir black comedy crime film released in 1994. Upon its release, Pulp Fiction became both critically and commercially successful many considering it the best film of Tarantino. The film received many accolades including seven Academy Awards nominations eventually winning the one for Best Original Screenplay. The film is praised for its unique structure, post modern composition, violence and dark humor. Many consider it not only the best of 90’s, but of ever.
  6. Forrest Gump (1994): Based on a novel of Winston Groom, Forrest Gump is a comedy drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film was a major success both critically and commercially. It was highly praised for its story, dialogues and acting. Dialogues like “Mama said life was like a box of chocolates…” became immortal with time. The film won numerous accolades upon it’s release including six Academy Awards. The film is preserved in the United States National Film Registry. Forrest Gump is considered as one of the greatest films ever made.
  7. The Shawshank Redemption (1994): Based on a Stephen King novel, The Shawshank Redemption is a drama film directed by Frank Darabont and released in 1994. Upon its release, the film didn’t break box-office records and ended up being a disappointment. But the film was critically highly acclaimed. The film received many accolades including seven Academy Awards nominations. The film is highly praised for its storytelling, acting and the grounded reality. The film is now widely considered as one of best films of the 90’s.
  8. Toy Story (1995): Toy story is a computer animated adventure film directed by John Lasseter. Toy Story was released in 1995 and it was the first computer animated feature-length film. The film was a huge box office success upon its release and received universal critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest animation films ever. The film received three Academy Awards nominations. Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 were released later on and the trilogy is now considered on the best film trilogies ever made.
  9. Saving Private Ryan (1998): Directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan is a war drama film released in 1998. The film is set during the Normandy Invasion in World War II. Upon its release, the film broke box office records and received critical acclaim. The film was highly praised for its direction, acting, screenplay and intense war action. Many consider it the best war film ever made also Spielberg’s best work till date. The film received eleven Academy Awards nominations. Saving Private Ryan is preserved in National Film Registry.
  10. The Matrix (1999): Directed by The Wachowski Brothers, The Matrix is a science fiction action film released in 1999. The film broke new grounds in the field of computer generated imaginary. The film was both critically and commercially successful upon its release many considering it one of the greatest action films ever made. The film was highly praised for its technical innovations and its use of slow motion camera. The film won many accolades including four Academy Awards. The Matrix is widely regarded as one of the best films of the 90’s.
